Pyridine-2-sulfonic acid methylamide is a prodrug that has been shown to be a potent activator of the insulin receptor. This drug has been shown to be effective in the treatment of diabetes and may also be able to prevent the development of diabetes. Pyridine-2-sulfonic acid methylamide is an analog of indole, which is a natural product found in plants that has been shown to have antidiabetic effects. Pyridine-2-sulfonic acid methylamide can activate glucokinase, which is a key enzyme in regulating glucose levels. It can also inhibit the production of alpha-amylase, which breaks down starch into maltose and dextrin sugars. Pyridine-2-sulfonic acid methylamide does not appear to have significant side effects at therapeutic doses.
