Description

[2-(Trimethylammonium)ethyl]methanethiosulfonate bromide is an ion channel blocker that belongs to the class of modulators. It binds to the α subunit of voltage-gated sodium channels and blocks their activity by a reversible competitive inhibition. This drug has been shown to cause functional studies in animals, including cardiac effects and effects on the central nervous system. The irreversible nature of this drug allows for desensitization of the target cell, which may be caused by receptor down-regulation or receptor internalization. [2-(Trimethylammonium)ethyl]methanethiosulfonate bromide has also been shown to be effective against viruses such as HIV and herpes simplex virus type 2, but is not active against bacteria or fungi.
