PNU 103017 is a potent inhibitor of human aspartyl protease. It has been shown to have potent antiviral activity against HIV infection, and also has anticancer activity. PNU 103017 can be used in the treatment of cancer because it inhibits the growth of tumor cells by inhibiting protein synthesis. The drug binds to an active site on the enzyme that is responsible for the cleavage of peptide bonds in proteins during protein synthesis. PNU 103017 is a stereoselective inhibitor, which means that it will only inhibit one form of the enzyme, leaving other forms free to function normally. It has been shown to be effective against resistant mutants in vitro and in vivo.
