Dimethyl 3-(4-fluorophenyl)pentanedioate is a marine bacterium that produces enzymes with lipolytic activities. It has been shown to produce soluble proteins and lipases that are able to hydrolyze the ester bonds of various substrates. Dimethyl 3-(4-fluorophenyl)pentanedioate has been screened for its ability to desymmetrize a substrate and has shown high activity against lipolytic enzymes from E. coli, C. concisus, and C. aminophilus, which are all bacterial species that can be found in the environment. This enzyme belongs to family of metalloenzymes called ionic hydrolases (IH). The IH family contains enzymes that catalyze reactions by transferring groups from one side of an ionic bond to the other side of an ionic bond without the use of water as a cosubstrate.
