- Ethylindene
2-Ethyl-1H-indene is a hormone that belongs to the group of estrogens. It is a synthetic estrogen that is used in clinical settings as an oral contraceptive. 2-Ethyl-1H-indene has been synthesized and characterized by crystallography, x-ray diffraction, and NMR spectroscopy. The molecule has a deuterated center which makes it useful for x-ray crystallography at high temperatures. The structure of 2-Ethyl-1H-indene is polyaromatic with phenyl groups and a strain.
2-Ethyl-1H-indene was first isolated in 1926 from coal tar by means of fractional distillation, but was not studied until 1959 when it was found to be an estrogenic substance. It is structurally related to estradiol, but slightly less potent than this natural hormone.
