Description

6-Nitrobenzo[b]thiophene is a reactive compound that can be used to locate cancer cells in solid tumours. It binds to the mitochondria in the tumour cells and causes changes in the mitochondrial membrane potential, which leads to cell death. 6-Nitrobenzo[b]thiophene has been shown to inhibit growth of cervical cancer and lung fibroblasts in culture. This compound is lipophilic, which means it can cross cellular membranes and therefore may be effective against cancers of all types. 6-Nitrobenzo[b]thiophene can also be used as an inhibitor for cancer cells. The inhibition by 6-Nitrobenzo[b]thiophene is due to its ability to bind with DNA, RNA and proteins such as signal transducer, which are important for cell division and survival.
