Sulfacytine is a prodrug that is converted to sulfapyridine, its active form, in the body. Sulfapyridine has been shown to be effective in the treatment of bowel disease and symptoms such as diarrhea and constipation. It has also been shown to have beneficial effects on structural analysis, biological properties, and the treatment of infectious diseases. The drug has been found to reduce choroidal neovascularization in patients with age-related macular degeneration by inhibiting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) production. It can also be used for the treatment of autoimmune diseases and other disorders such as glomerulonephritis. Sulfacytine also has antimicrobial activity against a wide variety of microorganisms including gram-negative bacteria, gram-positive bacteria, anaerobes, protozoa, fungi, and viruses.
