Methyl (2S)-1-methyl-5-oxopyrrolidine-2-carboxylate is a metabolite of histone deacetylase inhibitors that can be used as a biomarker for the activity of these drugs. It has been shown to act as an effector protein and inhibit histone methylation, which is involved in DNA replication and cell division. Methyl (2S)-1-methyl-5-oxopyrrolidine-2-carboxylate is also involved in the regulation of lysine methylation, which is important for gene expression and cellular growth.
