Description :
2,2-Dimethyl-1,3-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid is a substrate for the enzyme alcaligenes. It has been shown to be an expectorant and is used in industrial preparations. The x-ray crystallographic structure of this compound has been determined and it was found that there are two stereoisomers, which are diastereomers. These diastereomers are 1R,2S (l)-cystine and 1R,2R (d)-cystine. 2,2-Dimethyl-1,3-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid also reacts with acetone to form crystals of l(-)-cysteine when equimolar amounts of both reactants were present. This reaction can be catalyzed by microorganisms such as Achromobacter sp. The crystal structure of these crystals has also been determined by XRD analysis and they were found to have
