The compound has been studied kinetically and thermodynamically in proton transfer reactions and photoexcitation with visible light. It was found to be an efficient photochemical catalyst for the formation of a variety of substituted pyridines. 4,4'-Bis(trifluoromethyl)-2,2'-bipyridine can also be used as an acceptor in electrochemical studies and as a shift reagent for absorption spectroscopy.
