• Description: PU 23 is a liquid crystal catheter that has been developed for the dynamic measurement of blood flow in large arteries. The device consists of a liquid crystal cavity with a distal sensor and an optical probe that is inserted into the distal end of the cavity. The probe detects changes in luminance, which are transmitted to the sensor. This sensor decodes these changes and transmits them to a data acquisition system or computer to measure flow rate, pressure, and velocity. PU 23 has been used successfully in both animal models and human subjects to measure blood flow in peripheral arteries as well as in coronary arteries.
