(1R,2S)-Erythro-dihydro bupropion maleate (1) is a stereoselective drug that is metabolized by CYP2D6 to its active form, erythro-hydrobupropion. The prodrug has been shown to be an uptake inhibitor of acetaminophen in rat brain synaptosomes and increases the level of acetaminophen in plasma and brain tissue. (1R,2S)-Erythro-dihydro bupropion maleate has also been shown to be effective for depression in humans. It has been found that (1R,2S)-Erythro-dihydro bupropion maleate elutes at 6.8 minutes on an acetonitrile gradient and can be separated from its enantiomer by using a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer with a hplc-ms/ms method.
