5-(Hydroxymethyl)-1-methyl-2-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-3(2H)-one (5HMPD) is a metabolite of antipyrine. It has been found in urine samples from animals and humans, and is thought to be a product of the oxidation of antipyrine. The antimicrobial activity of 5HMPD against bacteria may be due to its inhibition of fatty acid synthesis, which leads to decreased bacterial growth. 5HMPD also inhibits the synthesis of proteins by interfering with the activity of enzymes such as protein kinase C and phospholipase A2. 5HMPD may also have an effect on drug interactions by inhibiting the activity of cytochrome P450 enzyme systems.
