Description

Nitrilotriacetic acid trisodium salt monohydrate is a chelating agent that binds to heavy metals and prevents their accumulation in the body. It has been shown to inhibit the formation of liver lesions induced by ethylene diamine and sodium carbonate, which are carcinogenic. Nitrilotriacetic acid trisodium salt monohydrate also binds to alkali metal ions and inhibits their uptake by proximal tubules, which may be due to its ability to inhibit benzalkonium chloride-induced dextran sulfate precipitation. Nitrilotriacetic acid trisodium salt monohydrate is used as a component in some cosmetic products, such as glycol ethers and magnesium salts, because it helps maintain the pH balance of skin.
