2-Oxocyclohexanecarboxylic acid is a monocarboxylic acid that is used as a pharmaceutical intermediate. It is produced by the hydration of cyclohexanone, with benzoate as the catalyst. The process of hydration is uncatalysed, so it does not require any external source of energy. The synthesis can be carried out in two steps, with the first step producing 2-hydroxycyclohexanecarboxylic acid and the second step yielding 2-oxocyclohexanecarboxylic acid. This product has been found to have an antimicrobial effect against bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli through its ability to inhibit anions and photometabolism. It also has anti-inflammatory properties due to its carboxylate group.
