2,2-Dibromo-1-thiophen-2-yl-ethanone (DBTE) is a brominating agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria by interfering with the synthesis of DNA and RNA. DBTE has been shown to be active against resistant strains, including those that are resistant to controllers such as aminoglycosides and beta-lactams. DBTE is a yellow solid with a strong smell. The chemical formula for DBTE is C6H4Br2O2S. This compound can be synthesized by reacting bromine with 2,2-dibromoethanol in the presence of glycol.
