1,5,7-Trimethoxyphenanthrene-2,6-diol is a phenolic compound that has been identified in plants of the genus Dioscorea. It has been shown to have anti-carcinogenic properties and is being studied for its potential use in the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma. 1,5,7-Trimethoxyphenanthrene-2,6-diol has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. This compound binds to proteins on cancer cells and inhibits their growth and proliferation. The binding causes the cancer cells to stop dividing and die off. 1,5,7-Trimethoxyphenanthrene-2,6-diol binds to markers expressed by tumour cells such as claudin 5 and CD44v3. These markers are found in squamous carcinoma cells but not normal skin cells.
