2-phenoxyphenethylamine is a cation that interacts with the anion moiety of 2,4-dinitrophenol. The bonding between the two molecules causes a decrease in the solubility of 2,4-dinitrophenol and an increase in the solubility of 2-phenoxyphenethylamine. This interaction is also observed to have selectivity for hydrophobic groups on proteins, which can be used as a model for protein adsorption studies. 2-phenoxyphenethylamine has been shown to displace hydrophobic groups from proteins and can be used to remove contaminants from water without altering its pH.
