Description

Benzonitrile is a nucleophilic compound that reacts with hydroxide ion to form benzoic acid. Benzonitrile is a colorless liquid with a strong, unpleasant odor. It is used as a solvent in the production of other chemicals and as an intermediate in the synthesis of dyes, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides. The second-order rate constant for the reaction between benzonitrile and hydroxide ion has been determined by experiment to be 1.2 × 10 M s. The biphenylene isomer has been shown to react faster than the ortho-isomer, suggesting that it may be possible to control which isomer reacts by changing the solvent or pH of the reaction mixture. Alkaline hydrolysis of benzonitrile yields 2-[(benzylamino)carbonyl]benzoic acid. This reaction mechanism can be explained by considering both first-order and second-order rate constants.
