Isohyenanchin is a potent allosteric modulator of acetylcholine receptors. It binds to the extracellular domain of the receptor and enhances agonist binding, leading to an increase in the activity of acetylcholine at the synapse. Isohyenanchin has been shown to have a low potency for other types of ion channels and is not active against nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. It has been shown to be effective in inhibiting the opening of cation channels in musca and Caenorhabditis elegans, but has not yet been tested on animals. Isohyenanchin appears to be selective for insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, which may be due to its molecular modeling or high-affinity binding site.
