It is synthesized through the trimerization of propionate, which occurs in a nonpolar solvent at elevated temperatures. Potassium isobutyrate has been shown to be effective against human serum and can be used as an analog for acetylcysteine, a drug that treats acetaminophen overdose. Acetylcysteine prevents liver damage by preventing the formation of toxic metabolites from acetaminophen via its carboxylate and hydroxyl groups.
