Description

Pikromycin is a polyketide antibiotic that is biosynthesized by the wild-type strain of Streptomyces. It has been shown to be effective in treating infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Clostridium difficile. Pikromycin binds to the bacterial ribosome at the peptidyl transferase center and blocks protein synthesis. The pharmacological properties of pikromycin are similar to those of other antibiotics such as erythromycin and clindamycin. Pikromycin also inhibits Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling pathways that may be involved in the pathogenesis of infectious diseases. This drug has been successfully used in a model system to study how cells respond to infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Coxiella burnetii.
