Furanocadalene is a phytochemical that is found in the roots and rhizomes of the plant Hydrastis canadensis. It has shown to be an effective contraceptive, due to its ability to bind to progesterone receptors. Furanocadalene also has anti-cancer properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit cell proliferation by binding to DNA, thereby preventing transcription and replication. Furanocadalene has been shown to have a protective effect against endometriosis and ovarian cancer. This compound also induces cytochrome P450 enzymes, which are involved in drug metabolism; it may therefore interact with other drugs being taken for medical conditions. Furanocadalene has been shown to possess anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
