Geldanamycin-biotin is a sesquiterpene lactone that exhibits cytotoxicity in human breast cancer cells. Geldanamycin-biotin has been shown to inhibit the growth of tumor cells by inhibiting the cell signaling pathways, such as the protein kinase C and MAPK pathways, which are involved in cellular proliferation. It also inhibits protein synthesis and induces apoptosis in cancer cells. Geldanamycin-biotin binds to the surface of tumor cells and prevents them from producing new blood vessels, which leads to cell death. Geldanamycin-biotin binds to reactive oxygen species (ROS) in mitochondria and reduces mitochondrial superoxide production. Geldanamycin-biotin also promotes mitochondrial fission and inhibits mitochondrial fusion by binding to histidine residues on the outer mitochondrial membrane.
