Iofetamine is an anti-cancer compound that has been shown to be effective in treating bowel disease and neuropathic pain. It is a small molecule that inhibits the enzyme tryptophan 2,3-dioxygenase (TDO), which leads to the accumulation of quinolinic acid and depletion of tryptophan. This accumulation of quinolinic acid activates a number of receptors, including nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors, which are involved in neuronal death. Iofetamine has also been shown to inhibit energy metabolism and cause metabolic disorders in mice. The drug can be detected by histological analysis or by blood sampling.
