Description

Rimonabant is a drug that binds to the cannabinoid receptors in the brain. It has been shown to be effective for weight loss and smoking cessation. Rimonabant is metabolized by esterases, glucuronidases, glutathione reductase, cytochrome p450 enzymes, or conjugation with glucuronic acid. It has been shown to decrease food intake and body weight through activation of specific hypothalamic neurons that regulate appetite. Rimonabant's clinical development was halted in 2008 due to concerns about psychiatric side effects such as depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.
