Description

Pyr6 is a potent inhibitor of the mitochondrial iron transporter, which is responsible for the import of iron from the cytosol into mitochondria. It blocks the transport of iron across the outer mitochondrial membrane by binding to the acyl chain of this transporter and preventing its interaction with ATP. Pyr6 has been shown to inhibit acetylcholine-induced calcium release in primary cells and to reduce cytosolic calcium levels in breast cancer cells. Pyr6 also inhibits poly(rA) polymerase activity, thereby inhibiting DNA synthesis and cell proliferation. Pyr6 also binds to dsDNA, blocking transcription and replication.

Pyr6 binds specifically to monoclonal antibody-activated cells that are involved in autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In vivo studies have shown that treatment with Pyr6 can be effective against SLE, reducing inflammation, disease activity, and serum autoantibodies.
