6-Methoxy-2-methylpyridin-3-amine dihydrochloride (6MP) is a fluorescent probe that is used to measure the activity of human carboxylesterases. It is hydrolyzed to 6-methoxy-2,3,4,5-tetrahydropyridine (6MT), which is a substrate for carboxylesterase and reacts with an aminopyridine. The reaction produces fluorescence when excited at 350 nm. 6MP has been shown to have an affinity for esterases that catalyze reactions in the liver. The use of this probe has been optimized and can be used to quantify the drug pharmacokinetics in humans and animals.
