4-(Methylsulfonyl)-2-nitroaniline is an antimitotic substance that is used as a mitotic index in cytogenetic tests. It is also used to screen herbicides and other substances for their phytotoxic activity. The mitotic index, or the percentage of cells with a normal number of chromosomes during mitosis, can be determined by counting the number of cells with a normal number of chromosomes in one field on a microscope slide. 4-(Methylsulfonyl)-2-nitroaniline has been shown to have strong antimitotic activity against the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus.
