5-Nitro-3H-benzofuran-2-one is a heterocyclic amine that can be synthesized from 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid. 5-Nitro-3H-benzofuran-2-one is an antiarrhythmic drug that inhibits the sodium/potassium ATPase pump in cardiac cells and prolongs the action potential. This compound has been shown to have a tautomeric form where one of the nitro groups moves to an adjacent position on the benzene ring. The enolate anion forms when the proton on carbon 5 is removed and is stabilized by conjugation with nitrogen. The oxygen nucleophile attacks this enolate anion and displaces the α hydrogen atom at carbon 2, forming a tautomeric form of 5-nitrobenzo[d]furan. This reaction is catalysed by primary amines such as pyr
