Phenylsuccinic acid is a chiral compound that can be used as an enantiomerically pure building block in organic synthesis. The (R)-(’)-enantiomer of phenylsuccinic acid is the more reactive form and has been shown to react with cyclodextrin derivatives to form stable inclusion complexes. This reaction is used for the large-scale production of (R)-(’)-phenylsuccinic acid and it is efficient, as only small amounts are needed to produce high yields. The (S)-(’) enantiomer does not react with cyclodextrin derivatives, making it less useful for large-scale production. Phenylsuccinic acid also reacts with hydrophilic solvents such as water and alcohols, but not with nonpolar solvents such as hexanes or benzene.
