N-(2-Acryloyloxyethyl)-N-benzyl-N,N-dimethylammonium chloride is a monomer that can be used to make polymers. It has an acidic pH and is soluble in water, making it suitable for wastewater treatment as a coagulant or flocculant. N-(2-Acryloyloxyethyl)-N-benzyl-N,N-dimethylammonium chloride also has the ability to bind to cationic polymers and quaternary ammonium compounds. This polymer can be activated by adding sodium chloride or calcium chloride. The viscosity of this polymer increases with increasing temperature, up to a point. This polymer has been shown to have diagnostic properties by binding to coumarin derivatives and fluorescing when irradiated with light at specific wavelengths.
