Benzeneacetic acid, 4-(methoxycarbonyl)-2-propyn-1-yl-, methyl ester is a cytotoxic compound that has been shown to exhibit antitumor activity. It is a prodrug of pralatrexate, which can be hydrolyzed by esterases or glucuronidases to the active form. The active form exhibits cytotoxicity against tumours and is effective in killing cells with low levels of glutathione. Pralatrexate has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the growth of leukemic cells.
Benzeneacetic acid, 4-(methoxycarbonyl)-2-propyn-1-yl-, methyl ester is a secondary metabolite produced by Streptomyces sp. It inhibits the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase and affects DNA synthesis and repair by inhibiting thymidylate synthase and dTMP kinase activities
