(R)-2-Amino-N-benzyl-3-methoxypropionamide is a chiral compound that has been prepared by the acylation of chiral 2,3-diaminopropanoic acid with an excess of (S)-lactaldehyde. This reaction was followed by hydrolysis to give the desired product in good yield. The impurity profile of the product was determined using HPLC, and it was found that the major impurity was its racemic form. This substance can be synthesized from (R)-phenylglycine and methylamine using phosphoric acid as a catalyst. The product can be deprotected with sodium borohydride to make it achiral. Lacosamide is an antiepileptic drug that is used to treat partial seizures and status epilepticus in adults and children aged 16 years or older. It also has been shown to have anxiolytic
