Benzoylprop-ethyl is an herbicide that inhibits lipid biosynthesis. It has been shown to be effective in the control of weed growth in cereal crops and for the prevention of dry matter loss due to low light conditions. Benzoylprop-ethyl binds to its target enzymes, such as acetyl-CoA carboxylase, by covalent binding to the thiol group of cysteine residues. This binding prevents the enzyme from catalyzing a reaction and leads to cell death. The low dose required for efficacy suggests that benzoylprop-ethyl may be more selective than other herbicides for use on specific crops.
