Description

WR99210 is a small molecule inhibitor of the P. falciparum sulfa drug target, which is an enzyme that plays a key role in the synthesis of purines and pyrimidines that are essential for DNA replication. WR99210 inhibits the growth of resistant mutants, leading to decreased levels of nucleotides and proteins necessary for cell division. This agent has been shown to be effective against clinical isolates of P. falciparum in human sera, as well as against other species such as Plasmodium berghei and Plasmodium yoelii, which cause malaria in mice. WR99210 also has potential therapeutic activity against autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis by inhibiting inflammatory cytokine production by T cells.
