Description

Knipholone is a natural product that has shown significant cytotoxicity against tumor cells in an acute toxicity study with rats. Knipholone is found in Linteus, a genus of plants belonging to the Asphodelaceae family. It was first isolated from the plant Phellinus linteus and has been found to be present in many species of fungi such as Boletus edulis (commonly known as Porcini), Inonotus obliquus, and Fomes fomentarius. Knipholone is also present in the leaves of Daphne mezereum, a type of thistle. The compound can be extracted from these plants using methanol or ethanol.
It has been shown that knipholone inhibits glucose production by blocking phosphorylation in the mitochondria, leading to decreased ATP levels and cell death. Knipholone also showed anti-tumor effects when tested on Sprague-
