Axitinib sulfoxide is a small-molecule inhibitor of the receptor tyrosine kinases, which are proteins that bind to specific growth factors and regulate cell division. The inhibition of these proteins leads to cellular apoptosis by preventing the activation of receptors on the cell surface. Axitinib sulfoxide has been shown to have activity against renal cell cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. In addition, this drug has been shown to have less toxicity than other protein kinase inhibitors by showing fewer metabolic profiles and being predominately metabolized by methylation. Clinical studies have shown that axitinib sulfoxide is effective in treating patients with metastatic renal cell cancer. There are also data indicating that axitinib sulfoxide can be used as an alternative treatment for patients who are resistant or intolerant to imatinib, sunitinib, or sorafenib.
