Azilsartan is a synthetic analog of the natural carboxylate, azilsartan. It is used to lower blood pressure and inhibit the activity of angiotensin II by blocking its binding to angiotensin receptors in the body. Azilsartan Methyl Ester is chemically stable and can be crystallized in a stable form. It has been shown to have good bioavailability, with higher plasma concentrations achieved after oral administration than after intravenous administration. Azilsartan Methyl Ester is metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 enzymes and eliminated through the kidneys. The drug substance is a biphenyl with an activated chloroformate substituent at one end and an organic solvent group at the other end.
