Graveolone is a natural compound that has been shown to have antimicrobial activity. It inhibits microbial growth by interfering with the process of protein synthesis, which is necessary for cell division and replication. In a model system, graveolone was shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells and also has an anticoagulant effect by inhibiting platelet aggregation. This compound also inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in response to bacterial infection in tissue cultures. Graveolone also inhibits phytophthora megasperma, a plant pathogen that causes root rot in plants. It is usually used concomitantly with other natural compounds such as petroselinum (parsley) extract or thymol (a phenolic compound).
