Homoferreirin is a bioactive compound that can be found in chickpeas and has been shown to have anti-microbial activity against fungi and bacteria. Homoferreirin is thought to exert its effects by inhibiting the activity of enzymes involved in the synthesis of fatty acids, such as lipoxygenase, cyclooxygenase and proteases. This compound also inhibits the production of phytoalexins, which are plant-derived antimicrobial agents that can inhibit microbial growth. Homoferreirin is also known to show anti-diabetic effects on diabetic patients. In one study, glibenclamide was shown to decrease homoferreirin levels in diabetic patients and showed a synergistic effect with the drug when used together.
