Hirudin is a drug that has been used in clinical pathology for the treatment of thrombosis. It is a recombinant form of hirudin derived from leeches and has biological properties similar to heparin. Hirudin binds to thrombin, preventing it from converting fibrinogen into fibrin. The drug is given intravenously to patients with deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, and typically results in rapid reversal of symptoms.
