6-Bromo-2-methoxy-1-naphthaldehyde is a cytotoxic agent. It is a bifunctional molecule that contains two reactive groups. One of the reactive groups is an electrophilic bromine, which reacts with nucleophiles in DNA, and the other is a leaving group (the methoxyl group) that can be displaced by nucleophiles. This makes 6-bromo-2-methoxy-1-naphthaldehyde cytotoxic to cells containing nucleophilic sites such as DNA guanine residues. 6-Bromo-2-methoxy-1-naphthaldehyde has been shown to inhibit the growth of L1210 cells and cause cell death.
