Sitka spruce is a species of evergreen tree that is native to the Pacific Northwest. The extract from the bark of this tree has been found to inhibit the growth of human pathogens, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Its extract also has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on cell growth in general, as well as on fatty acid synthesis. Sitka spruce extracts are composed mainly of diterpenes and ether extracts. These extracts can be obtained by either steam distillation or solvent extraction. The yield for this extraction process is typically between 3-5%. A laboratory study was conducted on the effects of sitka spruce extract on decidua cells, which are cells found in the uterus during pregnancy. The results showed that sitka spruce extract inhibits cell growth, which may lead to a decrease in preterm birth rates and other complications associated with pregnancy.
