Description

Mandshurin is an iridoid glucoside that has been shown to have a hypocaloric diet-dependent inhibitory effect on lipid accumulation in the liver. It also has a modulating effect on insulin resistance and glucose metabolism. Mandshurin has been shown to be effective in the treatment of hepatic steatosis, which is caused by high levels of triglycerides in the liver due to a high intake of fats, or from other causes such as diabetes. Mandshurin inhibits lipogenesis and enhances lipolysis. It also inhibits the secretion of very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol as well as reducing hepatic triglyceride synthesis and enhancing fatty acid oxidation. Studies have shown that mandshurin increases insulin sensitivity in obese mice and rats with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Mandshurin can be found in plants such as Verbascum thapsus L., which belongs to the family Scrophulariaceae.
