Description

Poncimarin is a natural product that has been shown to have therapeutic potential in the treatment of bowel disorders and hypertension. Poncimarin inhibits cholesterol synthesis by binding to the enzyme 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA reductase, which is responsible for catalyzing the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate. This process is necessary for the production of cholesterol and other sterols. Poncimarin also has an effect on blood pressure by inhibiting angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) activity. The ability of poncimarin to inhibit ACE activity may be due to its ability to bind with high affinity to the pharmacophore site on ACE. Inhibition of ACE leads to a decrease in angiotensin I and II levels, which in turn leads to decreased levels of aldosterone and vasopressin, resulting in lower blood pressure levels.
