Description

L-Palmitoyl carnitine is a lipid transport agent that is used to improve the absorption of lipids, such as fatty acids. It is also used in pharmacological research to study the effects of carnitine on mitochondrial function and metabolism. The L-palmitoyl carnitine kinetic has been studied with a model system that simulates human intestinal absorption. Chronic exposure to L-palmitoyl carnitine leads to an irreversible inhibition of carnitine palmitoyltransferase I, which decreases the production of acylcarnitines. This inhibition results in decreased levels of lipolytic enzymes, cytosolic Ca2+, and adipose tissue.
