Panduratin A is a natural product that has been studied for its antibacterial efficacy and enzyme activities. Panduratin A is able to inhibit bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. It binds to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. Panduratin A also has shown anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. This compound has been found in plants and is an example of a natural product with antibiotic activity. The main metabolite of panduratin A is panduratin B, which has shown cytotoxic effects on skin cancer cells in vitro. Panduratin A also induces autophagy in mammalian cells and autoimmune diseases in mice by c-jun phosphorylation.
