BY27 is a monoclonal antibody that binds to the effector proteins of Bacillus anthracis, preventing them from binding to the host cell. It has shown efficacy against bacterial strains such as Bacillus cereus and Bacillus thuringiensis. BY27 also prevents the formation of polyene antibiotics by inhibiting fatty acid synthesis and the activity of fatty acid synthase, which is an enzyme involved in the production of long-chain fatty acids. This inhibition prevents polyenes from being synthesized, thereby reducing their effectiveness. BY27 also inhibits the activity of a molecule called polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which is involved in DNA replication and transcription. The monoclonal antibody blocks PCRs by binding to an essential protein called replicative DNA polymerase α-primase, preventing it from functioning properly.
BY27 has been shown to be effective on human cells in vitro with no toxic effects on mammalian cells or other biological systems when used at concentrations up to 10 μg
