Dibenzylideneacetone (dba) is a useful reagent for the alkylation and monoalkylation of carbohydrates. Dibenzylideneacetone reacts with iron to form Fe(dba), which can be used as a catalyst for the conversion of carbohydrates to alcohols, ethers, esters, and amines.
